Everything you need to know about Hands-on!

Caitlin Millhouse ● 4th March, 2026

Hands-on is a STEM outreach society affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. We are entirely student-run and volunteer-based. We’re passionate about STEM and ensuring that a student’s background doesn’t dictate access to science learning. We provide and advocate for high-quality STEM activities for young people across Edinburgh and the Midlothian area. Some of the workshops we currently run include: lego balloon cars (forces), forensic science, circuit building, anatomy and climate change.

Our volunteers meet every fortnight to collaborate and design our interactive workshops. We are also constantly developing pre-existing activities to make them more enjoyable and educational. On the weeks that we don’t have our activity development meetings, our committee gets together and ensures the smooth-running of the society and our events.

As a society, we already have relationships with several schools in the area, as well as girl-guide and youth groups. We are constantly forging new connections and reaching out to more schools and groups to offer them workshops. We love hearing from you! If you know anyone that would benefit from our workshops or would like to volunteer with us (teaching or designing workshops), please do not hesitate to get in touch!
