Dynamic Earth: Public Engagement Day

Adrianna Green ● 07th March, 2026

In February, Hands On were extremely fortunate to attend a Public Engagement Workshop at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh. 19 volunteers participated in an afternoon consisting of a series of presentations, self-directed tasks, group discussion and three immersive experiences of exemplary workshops and was a great hit! We received amazing feedback from our volunteers, including discovering new ways to tailor STEM learning, the adaptations needed between classroom and community settings and new ways to structure workshops for increased interactivity and engagement. Being able to see the Dynamic Earth Education Centre in action was especially insightful. From a space workshop for 4–7-year-olds, a deforestation-themed session for ages 7–11 and a climate-justice workshop for secondary schools, we were able to witness how different techniques, pacing’s and structures can make a significant difference in creating a fun, engaging and inclusive activity. It was also an amazing opportunity to ask for advice and share ideas with experts in the field.

This session has aided us in ensuring that a student’s background doesn’t dictate access to science learning and fostering curiosity in the next generation of scientists for the young people across Edinburgh. We would like to extend our thanks to Dynamic Earth for their enthusiasm and generous support and to the University Of Edinburgh for helping with funding, both of whom were vital in securing this opportunity for professional and personal enrichment.
